General or Ordinary

'Never mistake an army general walking alone for an ordinary man’ was my lesson as I reflected back at the movie Gladiator. Every day we have an opportunity to live for glory, for Rome. When we diligently serve our bosses and Nation, we build character that we work for us in due time when our lives and that of our comrades are on the line.

It is this excellence in character makes us the best candidates to lead others into their deserved destiny because we live by a greater conviction needed to champion for the greater good of those that we love. I watch this in Mahatma Gadhi, Desmon Tutu, Miriam Makeba, Steve Jobs, Oscar Mureu and other generals that at some point could have mistaken for ordinary men.

What is it that you stand for and will be remembered for when we write your generations story? Will you be Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the great armies of the North, General of the Phoenix legion or will you will you be just an ordinary man?

Is the dreamer in you alive or did you quit the gym, stopped reading books, saving money, gave up the hope that Prince Charming or Cinderella will come, forgone your career advancement plans and returning to school, are you still reading through the bible, connected to God- and excited about 2010 as you were in the beginning of the year.

Remember a great leader who’s entire life was shaped by dreams? a child whose dreams shaped his future sending him far from his family as a slave and later a prisoner, while in prison he he interpreted the King’s cup bearer and baker’s dreams and he did the same for the King because his two dreams came from God and therefore a HBD (Heaven Bureau of Dreams) stamp on them. They were all fulfilled in their appointed time.

I say we check again what HBD got to say about how you are doing so far.
Here are some things to pick up and pray over ask for God’s help:

Healthy living- eating right and sleeping enough
Exercise and learning new skills
Relationships- peer, mentor and those you mentor
Relationship with God- Prayer and word
Career Growth- favor before our bosses/ clients/ lecturers.
Romantic relationships- for change in our approach, for a freshness in the script we are using so we have some creativity in the system, great understanding and that the men will arise to become priests, protectors, providers and cultivators to the women in their lives. No more mediocrity. May God bless us to enjoy what he has in store for us.
Family- for salvation, reconciliation (forgiveness), provision, love and blessings.
Lifegroup- that we will ready our hearts to receive from God, that the leaders will be blessed and protected and the fellowship will be a place where our friends will come and find God.
Finances- saving, tithing and giving- for innovative ideas to make more chums
Stewardship of time- that we will use our time in a manner that honors God. All these other goals are pegged on our ability to be good users of our time and our commitment to live out our plans.

Good company, Bad morals

There is no neutral space, you influence or get influenced- linda ochola. This thought came alive on Friday morning when I answered a phone call at 6.30pm from a friend I hike a ride with in the morning. Being too far from our usual meeting place I decided to let her go, realising how easy it is for me to ride on her good grace and as a result water down her discipline of time.

She was slowly slipping to create an allowance for my bad time keeping which in the end would eventually creep in to become part of her character. Lateness was a guarantee no matter how early she woke up so long as she was in my company and therefore I made a resolve to grant her permission to zoom off with a smile.

I have never met a poor man who has regard for time nor a rich man who disregards time.- anonymous - until I confirm this with a friend who enlightened me about this profound truth. It feels like the proper fix for all the mystery that surrounds time. I replay it in my mind every other time of the day to remind myself that my destiny is influenced by my choices. The stewardship of time or lack of it thereof is an indicator of an innate disposition that needs commendation or an overhaul.

Dine and Dance

I stumbled on the season finale episode of a show that got my attention for about one hour this past weekend. It was a group of about fifteen individuals whose lives were transformed, their before and after photos were worlds apart because they applied themselves to dancing and eating right. The winner of the show had lost about 40kgs while the group all together lost about 300Kgs in a matter of weeks.
Today I a start my week challenged about the diet and exercises I am engaged in so I can be transformed all round starting with my spiritual onto my physical, intellectual, mental, relational, ministry lifestyle. Will I emerge as the one who won the heart the people and found favour before God because I applied myself in his word and started living a life that showed evidence of true transformation?
Jesus narrates about the fatal journey of seeds that planted by a farmer except for a select few that landed on fertile soil grew to bear fruit. Some of these that grew on fertile ground bore thirty, some sixty and some one hundred folds depending on how they applied themselves.
This is the day that I make a decision to dance and dine right all the way to living a fruitful life tucked in divine principles. I pray that you too will become that fertile ground that produces much fruit.

The dreamer is up again- join the gym, line up books to read, save money, get hooked up, career advancement plans, go to school, a vow to read through the bible, connect with God- excited as always in the beginning of every year.

How do we get these and more to become a reality?

I got an answer or two from a great leader who's entire life was shaped by dreams. Joseph's childhood dreams, the King's cup bearer and baker's dreams in prison and the King's two dreams all came from God and therefore a HBD (Heaven Bureau of Dreams) stamp on them. They were all fulfilled in their appointed time.

I say we check again what HBD got to say before we start our journey into another new year.

Logs or Mona Lisa

Life has a way of bringing the things you need disguised in expensive, sophisticated too good for you packages or as logs lying across the road that could be sawed and disposed off or turned into a masterpiece violin, frame of the Mona Lisa and coffee table for the president's dining room.

I have had my ‘log sawing’ moments in life and there are times when I felt least worthy in the company of some. What keeps me going is a glimpse of the basic fundamental ingredients for the life of worth every minute, the possibility of a Mona Lisa.

Every day you present yourself and see others as priceless art pieces or as the logs across the road.

What you get to keep, your achievements, and the partner you have or will have for life is all determined by what the world around you perceives of you and the lenses through which you look at your world.

I am working on the foundations that will make the life experience beautiful...its loads of work. I remind myself and my sweetheart that we must make each other better. If I can not be the partner she needs to be the woman she must be then she is better off without me...what we are to each other now is not a preview but a reality of what is to come there is no magic of transformation at the alter.

Right now we are talking communication... which is loaded with everything, honesty, patience, forgiveness, romance, family, goals, ideas, events, ambition. How well we do in this determine how we handle other core pillars such as money matter issues- our needs, family that make it all worth investing our lives. We are taking it one day at time, working on our love.

Chapters of Life

As I walked to work this morning thoughts of college days came to mind and more specifically the people that made that Chapters of life beautiful. Pulled together by the hunger to achieve, to mean something and leave a legacy behind and with this serious cause came fan filled ride through to graduation. Many pages written that have shaped what we have become today. The season had an alpha and an omega.

Different books of life we are but with shared chapters to reference from. We make our own experiences, choose who we walk with, whose we belong to and knowing the times and seasons will determine how interesting a book we will be.

I look into 2009 plans for travel, business, health, savings, lifestyle, friendships, romance, career advancement and there are situations that God can stand on trial for crimes against me. Where was in when... (I can fill several situations where God absent when I really needed him) Mteja hapatikani.

He changed plans without a consultation. His word says that he suffered as I have and will all for my transgrassion. The seasons that come by that are off-script are opportunities for me to be submitted and synchronised to his will and purpose.

Life is full of the unexpected therefore I plan my life diary in pencil ready with an eraser to make ammends as he continues to make it clear everyday.

God wrote all the days of my life in his book... all of them jana, leo and all the days of 2010 and on before any of them came to be. Its like the way I can plan to cook stew I have all the ingredients and I know exactly what to do with it so in 40 mins so that its taste is heavenly. Before it was and when it is cooking I was there and I am executing the plan. The best thing the stew can do is let me do my thing.

It would be interesting to see an opinionated or worried stew that questions my abilities. So I surrender my yesterday, today and eternity to the almighty that I may become the delicious stew he will serve the world with.

A New Creation

I looked at my life through a different lens. I realised that I am responsible for my character- strengths and flaws because they are fruits of who I choose to be everyday.
God calls me a new creation, the old is gone and the has come therefore my heart, mind, soul and body have a new start in Him everyday. My daily surrender to Christ or lack of it will determine my desires, thoughts, attitudes that will result in my speech and actions.

A good man?

I would pass for a good man. I know of a dozen or so people who believe that I have great future ahead of me and a handful that would take a bulletin for me. I look into the mirror and smile in agreement because I have earned their respect and trust.

A deeper look into the mirror and the true reflection of who I am is revealed as I review the influence and impact I have in the lives of those that surround me. The scriptures say that wherever Jesus went he did well. His reflection on the mirror were the healed leapers, a tax collector turned generous, a paralytic walking after thirty eight years, twelve ordinary men with a mission that changed the course of the world and billions of lives changed through the ages by his love

What is my reflection, what is your reflection?

God greatest gift to us is His son Jesus Christ through who we find forgiveness of our sins and an opportunity to repair what we see in the mirror. A life that reflects the presence of hope, power and transformation for us and for the watchman at the gate, boss at the office, the city council askari, friends, family, the sick in hospital and all that we meet wherever we go.

Cheetah love

She sat still and only moved when she could not be detected. She was totally focused on her target and when the time was right she accelerated from zero to sixty five kilometers per hour in record time. The gazelle responded with agility but did not have a chance.

This was the third successful hunt in a couple of episodes that track the lives of the big cats of Africa. Many people would pay loads of money to watch one of the big cats in action. I was so immersed in the program and glad that the cheetah had made it only to be stopped in my thought tracks. What I would die to watch over and over is actually lifestyle for the cheetah.

A portion of scripture came to mind as I thought through this truth, Daniel says that they that know their God will do exploits implying habit that emanates from a newly found nature that dictates an extraordinary way of life that would warrant the attention of the world.

It would be ridiculous to have Cheetahs Awards ceremony for the one or two of them that managed to outrun a gazelle this year but it would be global event among wild dogs or hyenas or even humans.

I am putting on a new nature in Christ, a ‘cheetah’ one that will allow me to crawl on the deep Savannah grass and position myself to become Christ’s champion.

Convicted to Bless

Warm sunday afternoon pregnant with a promise of showers later in the day sat a tired and seemingly hungry mother of two toddlers . Besides her was a bag which I suspect was all she owned. She didn't look up or bother with the passers by, I guess she understood the futility of asking for a hand outs.

I didn't give her a second look but what I had seen was good enough to set me on the road to find her something to eat. All seemed futile because I could not find a single kiosk thanks to the city council efforts to keep the city tidy and safe. My determination to find one opened my eyes to understand how God can cause someone to get out of their way to bless you.

It is not in how best we present ourselves and most definitely not in our righteousness. It is in the goodness of the Lord that we have the education, the monies, faith, life and everything that we will ever call ours in future.

I was surprised to find someone else helping the mom of two to her feet so as to go have some food at the good Samaritan's home and handed over my blessing for her. It is so plain clear, In your obedience God will use you to bless others and in your delay or disobedience he will raise others to do more that you would have.

He reigns majestic, blessing you when you go our and when you come in.

"Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. ⁶ Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the great deep. Man in the mirror

A story is told of a rudy and handsome boy who was anointed King. He was the last born in a family of high achievers, so great were his brothers that his accomplishments remained in their shadows. He was so much in the background, a spectator in the family. A little boy how was sometimes totally forgotten whenever papa would brag of his tall, handsome and brave sons. His name was David.

This guy's story is a proper mirror of real life. Talent and betrayal, conquests of enemies and murder of a close friend, deception and earnest confession; restoration and humilty at the face of adversity and pride in moments of triumph. Can you imagine how many award winning drama series' he lived which are not watched on screen? Many of us would have drowned on the sorrows, but not David.

Here are the David's last words drawn from II Samuel 23:5"...Is not my house right with God? Has he not made with me an everlasting covenant, arranged and secured in every part? Will he not bring to fruition my salvation and grant me my every desire? "

I see King David's reflection in the mirror as I stare. I know for sure that life has its twists and turns but I can afford to smile because i am in covenant with God. We are are a winning team. I pray that one day God will say that I am a man after his heart as he did with the man in the mirror.

Deal With It

My phone address book has Oscar award winning stories to tell. Each name that comes up is loaded with memories of times gone by and dreams of a future that shone so bright. My eyes are a window that will testify of the emotions that come from a caller’s ID. My mouth could replay the instant speeches developed before I pressed the answer button.
Today I am taking stock; I have halted to look into my quiver to see just how my friends I have. I am assessing my armory to remove the rusty and broken arrows that I carry but will not be of function in life’s battle field.
A problem presented itself this morning in my thinking department, what to do with legendary arrows with no place in my today. Aces with no play in the game. Bosom buddies who put their lives on the line in the battle field for us, killed giants and dreamt of days when we would rule the world together but now they have been reduced to an email address or a contact in the phonebook.
I stopped explaining why I cannot be found any more to my veteran buddies, I deferred from sending friends on guilt trips for not being in touch. I am coming to terms with the fact that love and friendship must be nourished so as to flourish and some bear fruit, age and die. That’s life, I must deal with it. The hard reality is that we must go on and let the ‘fallen’ soldiers rest.
Christ’s model for friendships is to have compassion on the five thousand and feed them, teach and commission the seventy two, disciple the twelve out of which, you call out three that would see you up close and candid and to one, John, you can you really love enough to entrust your family to.
This goes out to all my friends to say thank you for sacrifices and the life investment you made in me. I apologize for those I have disappointed along the way. Today I am freeing every veteran I have made a prisoner of war (POW) in my friendship cell. You are free.

I ain't a bad guy you know, I just made a mistake, I am sorry for... you know, can we move on and talk about something else.

You know I did everything possible to get where I am, bidii yangu, so it would be totally unfair to expect more out of me.

I don't struggle with that stuff at all, actually I have never... fill in the blank, I am a nice guy.

These are few excerpts from the life of the nice guy I have being groomed to be for a long time now as a Christian. An image of perfection, a dude expected to be studying the word and praying on a regular basis and sharing his faith at every opportunity presented. Well! Let me say that that is the trailer of the movie of what my life is not in all senses yet I endorse it wherever I go and set the same standards for my pals.

I have become a screen saver displaying beautiful photos of green pastures, calm waters, relaxed sheep and a shepherd playing the flute but lack the nourishment, flowing waters of life and the presence of the Lord. I have adopted a form of godliness but deny its power. I cannot echo the words 'the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.' I smile and wave to the crowd like the Hollywood celebrities but I know for sure it’s all show business. Not all that glitters is gold.

I am exhausted of smiling at the cameras and managing my PR image among friends so I can fit into the 'Christian' club. My heart yearns for the more than what the club offers. I yearn for Christ’s stamp of authenticity.

I am stepping down from the on-high pedestal because I am only human.

“As the dear paths for the waters so my soul thirsts for you O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” Psalms 42. He is not found in my righteous attitude and religious outfit. The nice guy must be thrown off the cliff. I long for an authentic relationship with the almighty and with those around me.

Bubbles, Blossom and Buttercup, the powerpuff girls, were faced with a hard choice. They had to go up against Bibo, once a cute pet and playmate, a gift from their daddy, Professor Utonium. His instructions to them was to play with Bibo and feed him only once a day but they did not heed to it, every one of them would give a snack at different times of the day to express how much they loved Bibo.

He grew too big for the little snacks and started to consume utensils, electronics and finally furniture. The girls still played with him irrespective of his monster size. One day he made his way to the Townsville streets and fed his appetite on cars and buildings while the girls were asleep. The more he ate the bigger he became. It was only a matter of time before the mayor’s distress call came to the girls asking them to fight against their playmate and best friend, Bibo.

What were they to do? What will you do with the Bibo’s in your life, cute and harmless blessings that give you so much happiness, or perhaps that is what they used to be when you first got them but now you are receiving distress calls from the mayor, your conscience saying you must confront Bibo and make things straight!

Rail Tracks

I decided to take a walk to the NIC Back Upper Hill branch to handle a thing or two, thought it would be faster than catching a mathree because of jam. I was having some time of reflection as I strolled up until I got onto the rail tracks and memories streamed from a far yet familiar era. I remembered a time when walking to town or to westlands to meet a prospective client was not a matter of choice.

My eyes filled with tears as I thought about days when I would jog for an early morning class in the name of exercise and walk back home starved to start of my day. My biggest fear was explaining to an old college buddies what I was round and about whenever I met them because I didn’t really know

I was a dreamer like three Hebrew boys faced with a fierce fire and a King who did not understand who they would defy his decree because of a belief in a God they could not see. I was persuaded that God would see me through a fire I didn’t see but who effects I felt.

Today I am celebrating the end of the first ‘official’ financial year of a visual arts business entity that was once a dream. I didn’t see a time when I would be a blessing to other people in need, sign cheques, offer scholarship, move office and be hesitant to send out proposals because I did not have the capacity to handle the projects until I had extra hands to help out.

I am walking on a different form of rail tracks today faithful to trade with the ‘talents’ entrusted to me so that my generation and generations to come will glad that I lived. I am careful to remember the seemingly little miracles that become ordinary as God entrusts me with more and more.

“Beloved I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers. For I rejoiced greatly when brethren came and testified of the truth that is in you, just as you walk in truth” 3 John 2

I pray that God will cause you to pause your fast paced life to reflect on the ‘fierce furnace’ moments in you life so you may celebrate his faithfulness in the lil and great things.

Christian or not there is a principle that runs across the board, you will reap what you sowed. It is interesting to note that we sometimes think we can get away with stuff we have done by putting it hidden from others or simply evading the here and now consequence. Aristotle- the great greek thinker -would differ with you and say that the best lived life is the examined one. If you are keen to follow up the seed you planted then you will most definitely see the result.
My older brother was one of the ‘coolest’ dudes in school. He defied every rule and stood above the law, fought students and teachers alike. He went on to pick up ‘cool’ habits to earn respect because lazima tubanjuke, life ni short. It was a matter of time before he started reaping academic results that stripped him of his respect and pushed him further into stuff that would get him high enough to blind him from reality. The habits turned into masters that demanded he find means of paying the dues for all the relief he received so a new habit was birth, stealing and that led to broken relationships with those that loved him them most.
The masters made him an outlaw because they were on the illicit drug list, first to the school authorities and now to the police. My ‘cool’ bro that caused many to respect me whenever they had my sir name was now hallucinating, paranoid of everyone and everything. He dropped out of three colleges on his final years unable to pull himself together to stay at anything for long.
I would very careful the next time I have the grin of victory over something that I have gotten away with because my boss, teacher, girlfriend, the police, friends or pastor was not fast enough to catch me. The principle lives beyond my thoughts and present joy; I will reap what I plant. It may not be today or tomorrow but it is a guarantee that the harvest is coming.

I do not about you but chats with taxi drivers is so enriching for me. I get insight in one or two things every other time I ride with them. The latest of them was a conversion with Chris, a cab driver, as we took the shortest route to a client’s premises in Runda’s neighbourhood at 4.00 am on Sunday morning to finish up a wall mural before the morning service.

I was surprised to see a number of cars on the road at that hour. He observed that many of those guys where rich guys dashing from or to important meetings to close million shilling deals. Yes while you and I sleep they deal and while you deal they deal, and we wonder why they have so much.

He spoke of this one woman who had earned her way from south C house which purchased to her new mansion in Runda. Her portfolio sound like the Proverbs 31 one. He went on to observe how she accounted for every shilling that she spent and would munch on a homemade snack in between meetings in Five-star hotels.

I quickly dismissed her as a miser and wondered why many wealthy individuals are like that but was woken up by a truth in cashflow quadrant game that stopped me from advancing out of the rat race, bad stewardship of one, two or five talents that have been in entrusted to me. Chris sensed my thirst for knowledge and expounded by pointing at an incident in scripture that records that Jesus collected twelve baskets full of leftover food after feeding the five thousand.

Why would he who had access to heavenly treasures care for leftovers? Why wouldn’t he simply walk on now that he can call for more bread from his heaven account?

Now may he who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness. While you are enriched in everything for all liberality, which cause thanksgiving through us to God. II Corinthians 9: 10-11

Informed stewardship seems paramount in our day to day living because seed to sow and bread for food is supplied to us daily so we can be blessing to others.

May God grant you a heart for the widow, the stranger, the orphan, the poor, your folks, his work at church and all other avenues available for you to move swiftly and bless these so you can received a warm, ‘well done good and faithful servant’ welcome when you are done with the one, two or five talents grant to you by your father in heaven

Are you having sex? When was the last time you had sex? Was the question asked to the four single men who had been from a forum that has greatly changed their outlook in life. We are all shocked the audacity of the speaker. He was moved by the experiences of friends of ours who have done everything to stand as in Ephesians 6:10-18 but they caught up in sexual sin. We are talking about Christians who are on the forefront of church leadership. Yeah! Like some of you.

The answers from the passengers and the driver brought some truth to the light. We are feeble and are prone to fall into sin in whatsoever package. One in five active Christians is sexually active claimed one of the guys. Promise keepers statistics say about 50% of its attendees are caught in the same web.

So are you sexually active? Can you answer the question with your head up high? Can you defend your status in a public forum?

Shame catches up with you irrespective of the divide, for the single who are sexually active or the ones who have chosen the narrow path. Our sexuality has become private, leaving us in a position of struggle to fit in. You wish it away but let’s get real here; you always wake up to the shocking reality of sin that so easily entangles you.

You are not alone so gather courage to share your burden with a friend whom you can entrust and you will be on the road to freedom. Be the first one to drop the stone you were going to cast on the adulterous Christian next door who was caught in the act.

Our realness and honesty to God, others and ourselves holds the key to your destiny.

The Script

I have had my share of trials in life that have shaped my values and course of time. There are times that I have walked through the fire and found no lessons to learn from them then and many months later. A time when a friend in need is a friend in deed makes no sense as they point to portions of scripture that are supposed to anchor my faith through the storm.

A great warrior I may call myself but my medals lose their shine in the presence of brave girl I know. Her story would earn her an Oscars not for best female actor but for living through the experience that made the story. She is my hero. She makes my life’s story seem like a ‘Jack Baurs’24’ stretched over a decade while her ‘Die Hard 4.0’ checks in and out leaving you in awe.

In a midst of the her real life storms are doubts of what the future holds, there are times that the present hardships have caused her to lose sight of her dream as her surrounding has engulf her within notions that would suggest that the story ends right there. ‘Never Been Kissed’ last Saturday’s blockbuster had such a moment as the cheers disappeared and all seemed to be lost for the 25-year old girl in middle of a football stadium who was waiting for her Romeo to come kiss her and he was nowhere to be seen.

I have had a glimpse of the director’s script, I know how her life’s story will end so long as she stays within the cast, I know your script too should you choose to remain in the director that I speak of. He says, “if you remain in me and I in you, ask anything in my name and you will receive it.”

The rough patches that you are going through right now are part of the first scenes in a real-life Oscar Award Winning story. You need to live through life as the star in your story. You have the greatest of all time writer, director and producer, Jesus Christ. He shot his movie and its being talked about through the ages.

I know the plans I have for you says the Lord, plans to give you a hope and a future.

May God grant you all the strength and insight you need to see how good a director he is so his word which is the basis of your script may anchor your faith through whatever comes your way.

The Investor

One of my close buddies was dying of laughter as he exaggerated a story of how Calvin had been shocked to find out that a pyramid scheme organization had moved office or something like they had run out of cheque leaves on the day he was to pick a cheque on his ‘huge’ investment. We all joined in laughter and later reminded the story teller that he too had failed to get his return on investment cheque from a different organization because he did not have an account with a particular bank.

Muthoni on the other had been surprised to have received her first cheque on an investment she made with little or faith at all. These are but a few examples of thousands of people who stick their necks out with no guarantee that the money they are investing will ever come back. The promise at the end of the day overrides the worries and doubts of today.

There is a hymn that comes to mind as I think about investment schemes, whose words humble me;

Blessed assurance Jesus is mine

O what foretaste of glory divine

Heir of salvation, purchase of God

Born of his Spirit, washed in His blood

This is my story…” He gave up his deity in an investment venture, to purchase you and I. We had no guarantee whatsoever to deliver any returns on investment but he did it anyway.

We all enjoy this blessed assurance in him with no risks whatsoever. His promises are yeah and amen! He continually invests in us against all odds because he believes in us and longs to be with us.

What is your investment portfolio in God like? Can he sing along the blessed assurance hymn?

I pray for Godly wisdom as we reflect on our life’s investment portfolios. I pray for the courage to place our all in all in God.

The Formula

You can feel the excitement in the air as reports of the day’s happenings are shared among the mini-groups of students in the dormitory corridors and rooms. Another day well spent. My buddy Collins and I were celebrating victory in the District Science congress competition. We toped the biology Project Category and were in high spirits.

In a midst of the excitement was another clandestine activity. We were all giving back some items that made the day possible; the funkiest shoes, hot blazers, fine shirts and trousers that responded to the charcoal iron box well. It was good bye to them until the next time we need to impress the judges and the girls.

There are several principles that unconsciously shaped our lives then and still do today. Let me bring it home:

Time has flown by and so has our lifestyles but the principles still hold their ground. We continue to create formulas that make us look like we have it all together.

I learnt something this past week from Pastor Gowi that has stuck, “Sell what you maintain”. That sums up everything.

I pray that God will grant you revelation of formulas that keep you bound and that he will give you the strength to walk away from them and find refuge in him. He loved and accepted you as you were and his daily provision is sufficient.

‘A faithful man shall abound with blessing but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent’.-prov. 28:20.

She’ll Be Back

I stepped into the restaurant right behind a beautiful friend who had turned herself into a stranger because of her disappearing act. It felt like a re-union with a long lost friend and the hour and a half like a couple of minutes as we struggled to squeeze in numerous experiences into the short time we had.

It is remarkable to see how we take different paths in life yet get to look through the same windows of truth because our values are founded in the same faith in God. My portion may seem trivial to some and unfeasible to walk through to others yet the conclusion will be the same.

This beauty continues to be an inspiration to me in business, an entrepreneur at heart and driven to achieve far beyond anyone’s expectations. She made her first million before she was twenty and set out to become a jack of all trades and a master of many.

One of the little articles in her version of Nairobi Star was that she was recovering from losing a few million shillings of her hard worked money. Yes! You read right, a few million Kenyan shillings. Her composure when narrating this story still remains ingrained in my mind. The facts and lessons learnt from an experience that would leave many scared.

It felt like an extract from the guys from before who made a resolve to build saying, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” Gen 11:4. It is natural for us to accumulate so that we can be celebrated and that we may have a name and reputation that precedes us but all for what?

I am confident that she will get back on her feet and make more than she lost and impressed at her resolve to rebuild Jerusalem in 52 days like Nehemiah did in the presence of Sanballaths and the Tobiahs who plot against the works of her hands. Her supposed crisis drew her closer to the owner of the earth and everything in it.

I pray that we will all catch a glimpse of the eternal that rests beyond the precious possessions that money can buy that are like the morning dew. For wisdom I plea to be men and women of integrity who will be saddened by the state of affairs of those we call our brothers and driven to make a difference. Amen.

More than my needs

Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. It gave me great joy to have some brothers come and tell about your faithfulness to the truth and how you continue to walk in the truth. 3 john 2

An evening spent in a new city left a thought that defined the fundamentals on which I stand. I saw some cars that are normally paraded on catalogues and phones that cost an arm and a leg to own used to do business or so I imagined. I quickly concluded that these guys just love to live large. These are things that I subconsciously work towards achieving and are neatly tucked in my daily requests to my God, the Almighty.

The God that David referred to as his shepherd, his banner, deliverer, he is the mighty God, maker of the visible and the invisible, the healer, provider and more and more and more than I can relate to bigger than I will ever perceived with the help of the wisdom of men. That is the God I call my God, my father, my savior, my ever present help in time of need.

Note that all these are attempts to grasp the infinite with sensual elements that elevate us to a place of reverence that only allow us to scratch the surface.

The almighty is way beyond the tangible elements far beyond the wisdom accumulated by the whole world combined His majesty far greater than everything we can and cannot see. His great love draws him to use the simple things that we can comprehend to reveal himself to us.

It just occurred to me that my God’s will and work in my life is beyond the tangible blessings that continue to fill my mouth whenever I approach the throne of mercy. He uses my daily experiences to help me see as Job did, in plenty and in abject poverty faithful to worship in truth and Spirit.

I choose to walk in the revealed truth sometimes beyond the logical sequence that makes sense to the natural. A revelation I take with me today, that my relationship with God is more than my sensual needs and his ordering of my steps and participation in my life is to lower himself to cultivate my walk in his truth so I may use natural experiences to be the light that will draw men to Him.

He is beyond… walk ye in truth!

A friend for Real

The Lord God almighty has ordered my steps, sent people my way who have been significant in directing me to my next level, taught me principles on which I have founded my values, provided for my everyday needs and taught me where to fish and they continue to support my quest to be of service to the world that needs my gifts and talents and the underprivileged that would do with a helping hand.

You O God remain the author of my life, the script writer and director of all the scenes. Thank you for moments of inspiration that have spurred confidence and even dry seasons that have reminded me that it’s all in your hands and not in my abilities.

My redeemer; from thoughts and acts of sin that draw me away from you, by commission and omission. I have walked away from your precepts and invited guilt and shame for dinner but you O God have not given up on me. I have found the grace to be washed in your blood and clothed in you righteousness O God.

My healer; I count fifteen years of good health. Faithful you are to one they once called a sick-lin. A year would not go by without a bout of some illness that would run me to the doctors' and to a hospital bed, but God! Thank you for giving me health.

My provider; praise God for his provision of life purpose, livelihood and for simple rising to the occasion to be the provider of my needs, all my needs. I am fulfilled at work with every reason to smile. I say thank you Lord for career, a calling, and a people that believe in the vision that at one point seemed like a farfetched idea. Thank you.

My friend; more than friend you are. I am smiling right now because you are a good friend, the best I have. I get to talk to you and hear you out on everything under the sun. Even when I am deaf to you words you still whisper words of wisdom that makes me wiser than my teachers. You have great plans for us and have been more than patient with me as I struggle with self and the world that comes like a flood to sweep away my beliefs, my dreams and your words of life.

Every day provides an opportunity for us to deepen our friendship and I promise to do my end to the bargain. I heard you say the day before yesterday that it is possible to live without sin, yesterday you asked me to embrace grace for salvation is but a gift, and that I must do everything to preserve it by focusing on you. Today I reflect on who you are so faith will arise to realize the impossible that you have planned as part of my life purpose.

I walk with you as Enoch did, to the mountains I run to receive you instructions on the tablets for a people you have called me to lead. I say to the sun be still till I win this battle and I challenge the 450 prophets of baal to a duel so all may know that my friend is the real God. A double portion I receive, my future is far greater than my past. The world has seen nothing yet.

You Got a Call

The outcry of a people laboring
Beasts of burden they had become

This is the story of a man raised royal and with an opportunity to become the next ruler of the empire that ruled the entire known world then. He brushed shoulders with the elite and aspired to be celebrated. Despite all the affluence and the plenty at his disposal his heart was heavy with what he saw every time he stepped out of the palace doors.

He was caught up between ascending to the highest position in the State and standing up for his own people, aspiring to be celebrated by the elite or deliverer and defender of the poor and the oppressed.

Shall I wait to become the next celebrated pharaoh with State resources at my disposal so as to free the poor people who are caught up in an oppressive lifestyle?
I had the opportunity of stepping out of the palace last week and what I saw shook me hard. Twas a documentary on a few people in living in Kibera slums. A woman delivering her eight baby on the floor of her one roomed shanty with no husband anywhere to be found, a ghost marriage. There was Carol, a single mother of two who HIV +ve who’s strength and hope was focused on her kids. Abdul, a soccer coach who keeps his team together through a free education.

A glimpse of world that is not my own, a revelation of what my pocket change could do to change someone else’s destiny. I yearning to make a difference in the lives of a people made different from me because I have access to resource and opportunity to be part of the solution to a problem that will not go away because I looked away.
I am curious to hear what the Just God has to say to he who will be curious as to go find out why the fire is not consuming the bush. I hear Christ narrating a story about the Samaritan man who understood the great commandment, ‘love your neighbor and much as you love yourself.’

“Because I rescued the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless who had none to assist him.
The man who was dying blessed me; I made the widow’s heart sing. I put on righteousness as my clothing; justice was my robe and my turban. I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame.
I was a father to the needy; I took up the case of the stranger. I broke the fangs of the wicked and snatched the victims from their teeth.” Job 29:12-17

Nairobi Yetu Hii!

0946hrs Saturday, Nairobi City centre.

A gentleman receiving free entertainment every other direction he looked, wasichana wameamua auuuuuwiiiii! The streets are full of beautiful girls going about their business unaware of the havoc they are causing to all the men. Is that the case or these men the reason for the fitting jeans and the low-cut tops that would cause one of my buddies to exclaim "uch! uch! uch! kitu clean 3 o'clock. Nairobi yetu hii." I really don't know but the boys and I have one principle to deal with the situation, the first look was an accident, the second a choice.

Last Saturday got me thinking of how we are result of our daily habits that have become our character and shaped us into what we are so often described as.

I thought about the girls on the great parade. How many of them looked as they did as a result of the choices they made every day to eat this or that or to go for aerobics, swim or simply do fifty sit-ups every morning. Are they at their optimal or are the outfits they wear a cover for something they are not proud of? How many of these are at their optimal and will still be looking great come baby number three.

Mmh! what about the dudes? Is the pot belly a sign of peace and real health or is your body responding to the excess foods by creating a resevoir just in case you may need it later.

Your choices determine what you are and will become. Your selection to read scripture and invest in things of God, spend time with friends, and share your experiences with them, build relations with family and be a blessing to the needy around you, to take the time to develop talent and advance in training, eat well and exercise every day.

I wonder what we would see if your spiritual, social, mental beings were to manifest physically. Are you at your optimal?

Farida wako Yuko?

Wewe niaje ’ Farida’ wako yuko? I asked a dude who was assisting me in doing some décor. It was an opening statement to usher us into a discussion so I could get his perspective on a bunch of issues now that I knew little about him. He said he is not seeing anyone so I went ahead to to ask ‘ yaani humu kanisani kwote ujampata ‘farida’ wako? He smiled and gently let me know that he did not believe that a single girl in the church he fellowships could agree to go on a date let alone love him.

He redirected a sewer so as to create a floor and cartons to keep the cold out of the place he calls home. Running water is not an option because he must purchase his supply from the vendors and his tomorrow is in God’s hands. He counts his present lifestyle as a blessing from God because you have no idea what it has taken him to get here. These seem like nothing in eyes of many such as me who see his miracles as the crowd around blind beggar, Bartimaeus whose quest for sight seemed a bother.

Here was a devote man whose bright future was blinded by his past. He prescribed for himself that which he perceived of himself based on where he was from. I would not hold him fully responsible for his outlook because I think everyone around him seemed to keep him at that state. Nothing can come out of Nazareth we would conclude about the drunk for we call dad, drug addict bros, and prostitutes for cousins, control-freak mothers and workaholic sisters.

The dude you dismiss because he doesn’t look like he is going places or the mama whom you say is of another league, huko siwazani league kubwa. God’s calling you to move closer and ask, Wewe niaje ’ Farida’ wako yuko?

When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliaband thought, “Surely the LORD'S anointed stands here before the LORD.” But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. I pray that God will send ‘Samuel’ your way to anoint you King over the Kingdom that seems distant and that you may find the courage to take on the ‘Goliaths’ and challenges that will come along. Also, that you will allow God to use you to bring greatness out of the people around you by becoming God’s instrument to connect them to their destiny.

The Morning Mix

The highlight of my morning for a while was marked by a colleague's narration at the office on what went down in an exciting and entertaining morning radio show that drew thousands of listeners. The topics were controversial and unspoken in many a discussions yet they are the reasons for most of the drama in our families and marriages.

The intrigue and richness that came with the story teller caused me to be curious enough to find my cell phone ear piece so I could catch the vibe as it came down straight from the horse's mouth.

Allow me to paraphrase a thought expressed by Jesus. He said if you going against an enemy and you realize that your foe has more troops, it is wise for you to send a peace envoy and save yourself. He also said you have to sit down and work out the cost of building a tower before you set out lest you run out of resources and are called foolish.

Words of wisdom that jumped at me as I struggled to filter the content of the radio station so as to pick the juicy story, there were songs and callers whose cunning words painted uncensored images in the mind of this poor artist who was out to get the entertainment.

My conscious wouldn't stay still, a Pentecostal would say, 'my spirit was not at peace', 'roho yangu kachafuka.' What is it that I will be putting on the line for receiving first hand entertainment and being in the loop of the informed? My war, my tower.

A number of close friends have asked me how to hear God's voice. How do you know God is speaking to you? What frequency is he on so I can hear him comfort, encourage, rebuke and embrace me through the day every day. My question would be what radio station are you tuned to through the day every day?

These are words drawn from a beautiful song I listened to, based on a letter written by a girl in 1923 to her boyfriend as they planned to go off and get married away from her father who never liked the dude much. He had kept it in his coat pocked for many years and now was reading it back to her on the hospital many many decades later just before she went to be with the Lord.

It’s such Beautiful piece that opened my mind to a relationship that had its roots on commitment. You can count me. I will not let you down irrespective. In 1923 when we got only you and me and in 2008 when we have been through it all, still in love inseparable even by death. I will be loving you, love me.

I shut down my world of possibilities, ‘a lil bit of Jessica is all I want, a lil of mary is all I need…’ the ‘chocolate factory’ I call it. This network of friends that is held together closely by the possibilities of hooking up yet not giving enough to be counted on. We weigh and wait to see what’s up but never really commit.

‘Our father’ yes! ‘Our father in heaven’ are words that come out of our mouths in prayer but I have never paused to think about the weight of the words. Well! They sneaked up at me and dragged me to the depths as I led a group of men in fellowship asking them to focus on the first two words, our father. This was an entry to a world that we don’t often visit yet it shapes every other thing in our lives.

“What is the one word that describes your father?” I asked them “I speak of the one who raised you to become what you are or is it the opposite, the man who remains a ghost, a stranger, dictator, critic who would raise the bar higher every time you seem to excel with ease.”

“What was or is your relation with him like?” The answers to this questions confirmed to everyone in the room how imperfect and askew the relations with our fathers were. ‘There’s no room for improvement’ was the general feel for many, a resignation to the present or past happenings as a living reality that cannot be altered.

Our earthly fathers are a mirror through which we relate with OUR FATHER who is in heaven. When I say father there are attributes that go with it unconsciously because of the picture painted by my dad at home. Some of us have been blessed to have loving fathers who have been role models all the way while others have received stones and snakes when they asked for bread and fish.

I pray for courage to make things right, to replace the broken mirror through healing and reconciliation, for thanksgiving through all seasons. Under grasp of the weight of the title father and embrace of it gives us full revelation of our identity as princes and princesses, who home is in heaven and that we live to see his will done here on earth. We forgive and are forgiven, we trust in God for leadership in paths of righteousness.

I was about to turn the ignition key on and go back home to my quiet house, make some tea and immerse myself into a play station game I had left pending when I changed my mind, Got out of the ride and walked back to a saloon full of supporters of Arsenal, Manchester united and other s who took sides depending on where the outcome would place them on the table.

Yesterday I got a feel of the game; I become an insider for one and a half hours. I took a keen interest in the players, studied the mood of the team and reacted to the shots on goal. I put a face to the names I often hear whenever I hung out with my soccer frenzy friends. I committed my hour and a half to a team I had no full knowledge and sank to the bottom of the sea with it.

My questions answered in my choice to belong to a team, to hug strangers who stood up to be counted as arsenal fans. You would never understand the passion, drive, pain and joys of a community as an outsider. You must embrace and choose a side so you can see the world through the group eye glasses.

There a call to become what you say you are, a Christian. Take a side, belong and commit to have and to hold, for riches or for poor, in health and in sickness and to promise to love forever ever.

This is in honor of a friend, a comrade, and a man I respect so much, we call him Mr. President. A title he gained while we were in college for an outstanding record of walking the talk with regard to relating with the girls. There were no grey areas and broken hearts because he chose not to bite more than he could chew. If there was a nation of bachelors then he would no doubt be elected president and that is what we did.

I am writing in tribute to Mr. President because he has officially handed in his resignation and to start his retirement this coming Saturday as he gets hitched to a beautiful girl.

A 21-gun salute will be in order as we celebrate the end of his bachelor life and a grand entry to a world only known to those who have crossed the bridge. A dead soldier we call him because he is departing from the nation of the bachelors to become one with the love of his life, and the two shall be one. He will be dead to self and alive in love and commitment to be the priest, teacher, protector, provider and cultivator of his bride to be.

I can almost hear Mr. President Make as speech reminiscent to that of Apostle Paul:

What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. Papa helped me dress up in my new uniform and tied my first tie ever as I graduated into standard one. What started off as the most exciting day of my life turned into a nightmare the moment I stepped out of the car to an unknown territory. The upper primary kids were so tall and intimidating that I felt like a grasshopper that hopped into a class full of ten year olds.

I wouldn't let go of dad's hand and I hang on tight to his trousers promising never to let go. Nobody told me that promotion came with all these feelings of inadequacy. It took him many words and box of chocolate cookies to convince me to be a part of Mrs. Ikunywa's class, from that day.

That was the second of a series of cliffs that I had to jump to get to get my blessings. There are times that I have grappled in the dark with no view of where I am going as I struggle to shine His word on my life's path only to feel the edge and hear a gentle voice say, 'jump'

A cliff jumper I am, fully convinced that he who began the good work in me is able to bring it to accomplishment in the day of the Lord. He is involved in my day today life pleased when I am eager to find the edge of cliffs too steep to have a backup parachute just in case he fails.

My life surrounded by opportunities that promise nothing more that a 'grasshopper feeling' but matched by the assurance of my father in heaven that the 'bears' and the 'lions' I killed in the past protecting his sheep were real, so I run towards the edge of life's cliffs with a blessed assurance.

I pray that you will continue to trust in God and' call to him so he can show you great and mighty things that you do not know' Jeremiah 33:3. I pray that the assurance that He has never failed will keep us trusting because even if He was to let us fall, the bottom of the cliff is His still. So whichever way we go, we remain within His grasp.

I rushed out of the office to car to go for a weekly prayer meeting organised by a group of friends who have seen it all together since days of high school through college till now. The prayer issues have shifted from relation conflict with folks, exams and school fees to business deals, promotions and serious relationships destined for the alter. We go back a decade of meeting together this year, a celebration of friendship and an illustration of commitment to love and be together beyond limitations that tear beautiful relationships.

The single thought that ran through my mind was how Daniel's mission in life was accomplished irrespective of his slave status. If he were living today he would have been a Israel-Immigrant (war refugee) who rose the ranks to become the US- Secretary of State from Ronald Regands era through George Bush snr. Clinton and now W.Bush. Unapologetic about his faith in times when loyalty to the president came before faith in God. I almost forgot that this secretary of State was a prophet of God.

We are talking about a God who is willing to turn anything and everything to honour his covenant with me.

I spent sometime thinking about a thorn in the flesh that I would run towards and not against but was unsuccessful in the recent past for reason that are beyond explanation. I took that to mean God was fighting my battle and dedicated myself to holy living only walking out of the prayer meeting with a strategy to go back on my commitment.

I failed again, felt embarassed and so set up by God. Its unbelievable that anyone could fail to sin. I set myself up but was unable to deliver. I must be a disappointment to the devil as i witnessed God raise the standard of righteousness. faithful when I was unfaithful. He is the father that embraces me when I smell like pigs from a land far off with open arms.

I loved the bold and the beautiful, Wild rose, No one but you and Esmeralda when I was a teenager. Every other day we would gather as a family around to catch the episodes just after dinner. Each episode became the main topic of discussion early the next morning in school before we went to the class. Woe unto them that did not get to watch the episode. That was then, somewhere along the way testosterone conducted a coup and occupied all the media compartments of my mind.

Up until Saturday I was a strong life-member ‘WMDES’. We are about to register an organization that will lobby against the soaps. We call it ‘We Men Don’t Enjoy Soaps (WMDES)’. There is a unanimous opinion among men that Soap operas add no value to any viewer anywhere and they are baffled at the amount of hours these programs occupy in our national TV stations.

Something happened on Saturday morning that gave me a glimpse of a truth that questioned my devotion of WMDES. I watched my lil sister connect with a character in a Nigerian movie, yes I said a Nigerian movie O and she was glued it. The character in the movie was having a problem with her boyfriend because he was keeping secrets from her. He accused her of looking through his stuff but the girl stuck to her guns. The fact is he was keeping secrets.

Then is when I realized that my lil sister was in a life skills class. She needed to sharpen herself in the one area that is most important to her, as a woman; relationships. The movies and the soaps are her textbooks, teaching aids that act out all manner of situations and allow her to deliberate on the life issues without her going through a real heart ache.

So I take a back seat in the WMDES but with caution that not all media is beneficial. There is a truth that keeps me going: Our beliefs form our values, our values shape our decisions, and these decisions are the basis of our actions and the actions, character. Your character will determine your destiny

My attention was drawn to the dates on epitaphs around as the preachers faded into the background at a friend’s sister’s burial service. There was no order of the start or end of life’s journey, it became personal then I saw dates that came after my birth day. It got me thinking; I deserve to live longer so I can accomplish my life goals and happiness that I think come with accumulation of wealth and becoming a loving husband and father.

03.07.78 - 03.02.08 would be curved into the stone if my journey came to a close today. I have no control over the start or the end but I know I can determine what goes into the hyphen (-) between the two dates. I can only guess what some of my friends and family would say I did with my hyphen that would be excited yet I am saddened by some of the things that will only linger in their heads, thoughts of what would had done better had I been as courageous as David or Nehemiah or Noah to this generation.

‘Can a man change his stars?’ asked lil William, A knight’s tale. ‘Yes, William’ whispered his loving father. Our ‘peasant’ backgrounds are firmly painting our present and future without our consent; chained to thought patterns that guarantee nothing more than a hand to mouth lifestyle that knows no plenty. A mediocre script that says you will turn out into nothing more than the ordinary guy next door. Do you believe that?

What is it that I must do to change the stars? What do I need to do different so that I may turn out as God ordained? So I impact my generation and a legend, counted as one of the good men. A hero to my dad, mom, sis, bro, buddies, boss, wife and kids.

I am in the process of reconciling my faith in God with the current happenings in the nation or should I correctly term it as a Nation-state as the political scientists would have it. One of closest friends in college likened the nation-state to group wild animals trapped in an area with limited resources. She went on to say that for these to survive then a code of conduct must be set. The lions, zebras, cheetahs, hyenas, Ostrich and the general flora all need to find a balance so that they could all survive. Without it then all would die. Do you remember what happened to the land when Scar face and his hyena buddies took over pride land in the Lion king movie?

We will always be different at the core because Kenya is State of many nations. Our native languages, culture and traditions, history and heritage are all beautiful and must be celebrated now and in time to come. I love my Country enough to defend the code that binds us together as Kenyans before our identity as Zebras, Lions, Cheetahs or Hyenas and my faith in God challenges me to love my neighbor even when I am certain that they do not deserve it.

I am acknowledging fully well that I cannot embrace and claim to love God and hate my brother. I am forced to turn the other cheek so I can be slapped, walk an extra mile and give away my tunic because it is then that the world will know that we are Christians. Note this is not to say that we are to ignore the fact that the treatment was unjust but rather to forgive the doer because he/ she has no revelation of the eternal things that govern our lives. The earth is the Lords and everything thereof. You won't be here in 2108 to give your opinion or enjoy the rights you are willing to sacrifice everything for but I know God will be here

I have no better answer to the current crisis but LOVE that covers a multitude of sins and reconciles us to the father and other men whom we could otherwise term as 'gentiles' who do not deserve to hear and receive the good news of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Acknowledge the facts and love enough to forgive and yes! Forget.

I slowly strolled into the compound with a heavy heart. I sat on the stairs with my hands clasped together and tears began to roll down. I really needed some comfort through a hard season. I had received news from home that my beloved sister, Diana had gone to be with the Lord after a short illness. I guess I was alright through the day because I had people around me and now reality had caught up with me.

I felt alone and lonely in search of comfort as I mourned my loss. Caught up between ‘I am strong and I can do this’ and ‘I need to talk to someone because it really hurts on the inside.’ My ship continued to sink into ocean of tears that caused me to feel alone, my world was collapsing.

It’s in a midst of this with no strength to talk to my God that my phone rang. Unknown ID but with the +44 UK calling code, It was my buddy who was calling to ‘sema pole.’ It took her a while to get me out of my present state but she sure did a superb job.

The LORD is my shepherd;I shall not be in want. Psalm 23:1

I can testify of God’s rod and staff comforting me through that time of want. He allowed me to come face to face with my loss and caused a friend in deed who was many thousands of miles away to call and have a two hour conversation that drew me out of the valley of the shadow of death to lie down beside still waters.

My God never slumbers and is on time even when I think he is three days late. I am grateful to God and to all who have allowed Him use them as an extension of his arms of love and comfort to me through my time of bereavement. Thank you.

The Fugitive

He was pushed over the edge by a passion to defend a belief that consumed him on the inside and this one act made him a wanted man, a fugitive on the run from the best law enforcers the land. The act would be termed as stupid in many ways because he put his political career and his bright future on the line. He became shame to his foster mother. His brave act of defending the oppressed man only moved him further from any possibility of ever being the man he thought he would be, the peoples president.

This month is been filled with crossroads, disturbances of the status quo that I was accustomed to. The happy thereafter clause is in question. My heart holds dearly to what I love but my mind is filled with righteous code based on knowledge that demands decisions that will alter everything. My soul is torn apart as I walk through the valley of decision. The here and now costs are too high a price to pay but it must be done.

Anyone acquainted to chess can attest to the dilemma I speak of, loses that must be made. Sometimes I imagine what would happen if the bishop and knight were alive as we moved the pieces around. Would they demand consultation? Would they take off in protest when we seemingly made the necessary decision for the good of the kingdom?

The major pieces of my life are in motion. I feel like standing up in protest but I must be still. I know the mover and the overall outcome of the game I call my life. He says he makes all things beautiful in his time, turns ashes into beauty.

The fugitive I spoke about in the beginning made a return to his people after four decades in exile to complete his mission as a nationalist. His new status as a freedom fighter got him a place in history as a deliverer of his people. His return was a commission from the grand chess master, who is currently moving the pieces in my life.

His submission to God turned him into a man of great accomplishments yet described as the meekest man that ever lived in the holy book.

In the Line of Duty

I signed up for the class because I knew my ticket to key to unlocking many doors in my life was found in the practice of the truths that I would stumble on in the class. Joining in class seemed to fit in with what my bro, Andrew asked of me in the beginning of this year; to spend more time with God in prayer this year and I will be able to hear God’s instruction on what to do so as to fulfill my calling in him. It is an excellent class surpassed my expectations.

Gideon’s story in judges 6 is one lessons in the class that has not left my mind. The angel of God appeared to him and called him a great man of war but he saw himself as one from a nation in bondage, from the least tribe, the least clan and he was the least in his family. I am imagining the beginning of the Spiderman or perhaps Batman when he is nobody and you would not doubt that because he has everything that someone needs to fit into that definition.

I have no idea what you are behind the mask but you do. I do not know anything about your past and what you have been through to get the little wheat you are threshing at the dry well. It may be the job, friends, fellowship, family or relationship that you hold onto with your dear life hiding it from the destructive medianites. What is it that you have settled to become? Look at your siblings, your folks and others that are dear to you. What have they settled for?

I hear God call you his hero, a mighty man or woman of war. You were built to lead your family of 300 hundred to conquer thousands upon thousands. Build an alter and listen to his instruction on who go out and cut down the idol alters that stand between your family and your God.

I pray that you will have the courage to be the ‘Gideon’ of your family. You will rise up the knowledge that the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty though God to the pulling down of strongholds. II Cor 10:4. Your family awaits you.

Head Over Heels

She planned to be in relationship with me long before I knew her. She diligently asked God for me and toiled close to a year in order to have me. Her efforts bore fruits because I fell in love with her at first sight and continued to grow deeper and deeper as the days flew by.

I later got to find out that she took leave from work prior to our first date and that she would be on a leave for a while to share special Kodak moments with me. All her attention, affection and her whole world was mine. She would put everything else second for me. Boy! She is woman that ever man would do anything and everything for and one whose place remains special for all time, her name is mama.

Mama used everything she had in her power to make sure that the son she asked for received everything he needed to become what he was wired to be in life, but what was a mama’s wish in the hands of the estate ‘gang’. We would go through the rubbish heaps that came from our homes in search for ‘treasure’, play soccer in the rain, shop lift in the canteens and the mini-market, steal guavas from our Asian neighbors, hunt down innocent birds and come home looking so innocent and well behaved. The older boys were into the hard stuff and it was a matter of time before we graduated into that.

One thing kept me from excelling in the school of hard knocks, Love. I saw Christ in mama day in day out. I knew that she prayed for me whenever she was on her knees acknowledging that it took more than a good school, the stroke of the cane and material possessions to raise a child in the fear of the Lord. It worked I tell you. She was the bridge I needed to meet Christ and the bible that illuminated the way back to the father.

I pray our love for our family, friends, neighbours, workmates and even enemies will be the loudest and most effective sermons that they need to come to the saving knowledge of our Lord Jesus.

“They shall know you are my disciples if you love one another.”

Words of Life

November as a defining month, one in which new things are birth, the old is gone and the new has come. It all began in a hospital room fourteen years ago. I was standing by mama’s bed in school uniform. Mama had suffered a stroke that paralyzed the right hand side of her body.

She whispered something that has remained as an anchor to my life. She said God is faithful to take care of my lil brother and me. That I should firmly hold on to my faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. That was it. It was the last conversation I had with mama and the one that has laid a foundation for a journey of faith. She went to be with the Lord later in the month.

Her words set me running towards a God whom I had seen at work in her life. I clung onto the unseen God on mama’s advice not knowing that it was the door way to experiencing true love. In fulfilling her life's purpose she illustrated to me what it meant to be a Christian.

Salvation is two edged, personal and collective, Jesus is my personal savior and our Lord and savior as a community of believers. I have seen the value of getting personal with Christ and allowing him to use me as a vessel to bless and to be blessed by others that he surrounds me with.

Today I celebrate mama’s life and her priceless investment in my life. I celebrate mama's life, one that forever remains as an example of total surrender to the Lord. It’s my prayer that my life will be an offering that is pleasing to God and that will impact my generation and the next for life.

A Beautiful thing

Today I start on a new journey; it’s my first day at an office away from my home office. An answer to a prayer and a dream I have heard for many months now, but the office story is for another day.

Yesterday I got to hang out with a girl so smitten yet sober narrate her journey to the beginning of a love relationship. She had an underlying confidence that seemed to echo eternity as the destiny of their love for ‘friends are friends forever, if the Lord is the Lord over them… and life-time is not too long to live friends’ Amy Grant.

When I say ‘I love you,’ I am expressing the depth of my commitment to be counted as a friend who is ready to lay down my life for you. It’s a declaration that says what is mine is yours; it’s a lifestyle selflessness, the beginning of a life of devotion to do everything in my power to make sure you get the best out of life.

I guess the picture is clear; it takes true courage for anyone to genuinely make such a declaration. The good book asserts that there is no greater love than this, than a man would lay down his life for a friend. The expression entails s a life of sacrifice and not medals or prestige. Its seems like a deliberate choice to bite the bullet or exposure to harm’s way if that is what it will take to give the best to your friend.

“…Where you go I will go, where you stay I will stay, your people shall be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me”. Ruth1:16

It’s a beautiful thing to love and be loved like in the case of Naomi and Ruth, Joseph and his brothers, David and Jonathan, Jacob and Rachel, You and yeah… you know who.

I pray that you will embrace every opportunity to love and to be loved and that you will exude the character and attitude of Christ, who being in the very nature of God did not consider equality with God something to be grasped making himself nothing, taking the nature of a servant. His love made perfect in us with no fear so that in loving one another they will know we are his disciples.

They are Happy too!

Lil Mumble jumped around in excitement. Asked what he was doing by his papa. He said he as happy, that was followed by a second question on what he was doing with his feet he said he guessed they were happy too. His dad went on to tell him that it wasn’t penguin to do that so he should not do that.

That is a snippet description from the movie ‘Happy feet’

Now ‘Happy feet ‘was more than a movie for me; it’s a window to realities captured in a script that has served me right. My reaction and that of other people who’ve watched the same movie confirms a truth a learnt years back.

Our search for God and his search for us meet in the windows of our everyday experiences. These encounters are windows of the soul that act as our life’s road maps to God and his everyday purpose for us.

“But we must learn to look with more than just our eyes and listen with more than just out ears. A wonderful day it is. I just had a lovely breakfast with a buddy whom I have known for over a decade now. We celebrate the beauty and richness of growing together in love and fellowship in a unique way. We are through the look-good acts and enjoy the gift of being real with one another.

A thought crossed my mind on my way to the office that got me thinking; who is that a godly woman? What stands the test of time when we go under the microscope to qualify a dude or chic as fit for a mate? I would love to ask the same question to a couple of buddies who have been married for say four or five years.

Does she still draw you by the way she leads worship at church, serve others, lead the bible study, speak a word in due season into your life? ‘His love for God’ she would says ‘is what draws me to him, he is so available to be used by God”

Godliness and service or ministry is used interchangeably in many circumstances so that those with more expressive gifts of service steal the show as godliness is about the worship leading, teaching, prophecy, ma-miracles, intercession (prayer warrior hivi), Shepherding, evangelism yet there is the merciful one, the generous one who gives in secret, the encourager and woman of faith whose courageous step made a difference in the nation.

I search for godliness that is drawn from emulating Christ. The realness that has gone beyond the look-good acts as we grow deeper in love for one another and in serving God and others with gifts bestowed to us.

“If I speak in the tonguesof men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecyand can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge,and if I have a faith^r that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing…When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish waysbehind me…And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.But the greatest of these is love.” I Cor 13
